Hand Paint a Wood sign

If you have ever wondered how people create those cute wood signs that you see everywhere, read on for my instructions on how to hand paint a wooden sign. I have also included an svg file that you can use to recreate this sign (personal use only, please). Just scroll to the bottom of the post for more info.

I’m sure the past few months have been worrisome for many. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I can feel anxious about the unknown. So I decided to paint myself a little reminder of God’s love and care towards us.

How To Hand Paint a Sign

You’ll need to find yourself a piece of wood, or something else to paint your sign on. I just used a scrap I found out in the garage. I painted it brown to resemble staining.

(TIP):

(To use paint on a piece to resemble stain, I add a little water to some brown paint, paint it on the board in sections and then rub it in and wipe off the excess with a paper towel.)

Next, I sized and printed off the design I wanted to use. I layered it on the wood with a piece of graphite paper and traced over it with a sharp pencil.

Then I proceeded to fill in my design with a thin brush and a steady hand. I added some shadowing on the word sparrow and a tiny bit of white on the black silhouette. Adding those details really help bring your image to the next level. It’s definitely not perfect, but good enough for me.

Now you know how to hand paint a wood sign. And it’s also the perfect daily reminder of God’s love and care towards His children.

Matthew 6:25-26 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

His Eye Is on the Sparrow

Why should I feel discouraged?
And why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely
And long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portion
My constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches over me

I sing because I am happy
I sing because I am free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
